Preparing for Graduation

One day, the seniors will be closing their locker for the last time, they will be walking through the high school hallways for the last time. One day they will attend their last high school dance with their friends. One day they will be standing in alphabetical order on bleachers wearing their graduation caps, and gown watching their old friends and new friends walk the aisle for their diploma. Friends who they watched grow up. Some of these people who they will never see again. This time is now. Graduating seniors are now prepping for their last day of school and the big day that they will be leaving the High School forever.

The graduation date is June 6th, and the Seniors are ready. Seniors have to arrive at the school for 10 a.m, and the families arrive around 11 am.

Kelley Fitzgerald, a senior at Sandwich High School, says that she is “excited to personally connect to the ceremony. One of my best friends is making a speech, and I am so excited to see her speak.” Fitzgerald thinks that among the Senior class there are a lot of innovators and forward thinkers that will accomplish a lot in the future.

This year many exciting new changes are being made to the graduation, one including the color of the graduation caps and gowns.

Carolina blue and navy will be the new colors for the cap and gowns, caroline blue being for the girls and navy being for the boys. Mrs. Carlyle, the graduation coordinator, says that different colored gowns for the senior class was planned last summer and was the biggest change made this year. “What a class wants, we must plan in advance to achieve their vision,” Carlyle says, “we tend to be traditional. What happens in one year, we try to continue in the future years, so everyone gets the same experience.”

The planning for graduation begins on the first day of school, with ordering caps and gowns to getting the permit for the graduating field. Graduation this year will take place on the DeConto field, but, of course, there is always some delay. The permit for the stadium was held back due to construction problems, holding the question of where the graduation will end up being held. Fenton field, like the past years, inside, or on the DeConto field?

Another necessity of the graduation planning is the ushers. Mr. Schermerhorn, the usher advisor, says that the ushers “meet and greet proud family members that are celebrating kids graduation day.” This year the walk for family members to get to the field is doubled since DeConto field is farther away than Fenton. Schermerhorn expects kids to be on their game and bring a welcoming personality to graduation day.

This time of the year is a very bittersweet moment for graduating seniors. Graduation is an event that will is remembered for years to come. The graduation coordinators are hoping for a very sunny and smooth beautiful day, Sandwich High School as a whole wishes these great achievers a successful future.
