Senior Privileges

As high school students reach their senior year, they develop a different mentality than the one they had before. Seniors expect to be treated differently and to be able to participate in activities lower classmen can not normally do.

Seniors should have more privileges; they have worked hard to successfully complete high school and are worthy of certain celebrations and acknowledgments towards their accomplishments.

Senior Kyle Jacob believes that seniors have earned extra benefits: "We've spent the most time in high school and in most cases we are more mature, so we deserve them."

Senior Lexi Pace also had some examples of privileges seniors could have: "We already get out early, but we should be able to dismiss ourselves if we're 18. Seniors should be able to have three unexcused lates, but they’d have to come in at least before the end of 2nd block."

The experiences at Sandwich High School have led seniors to this point in time, and whether they will attend college next year, enlist, or have other plans, they can all agree that high school has been a huge learning opportunity. They should have the opportunity to celebrate all the work they have put in the last four years of their lives to appreciate life so far but also get ready for the next steps of life.

Until last year, there was a designated senior parking lot in which senior students who drove to school could specifically park. With the addition of STEM and the rearrangement of the parking areas for students and teachers, a new senior lot was never reestablished. Having a new senior lot could be a positive addition to the advantages of senior year.

Currently, SHS seniors also have the senior lounge, where students can choose to eat lunch together in a room located slightly separate from the cafeteria. However, this room is somewhat small and there are sometimes not enough chairs and tables for the total amount of people that could sit in there.

Senior Maddie Oakley says that other high schools have privileges for their students: “I think all schools have something. Even if it's small, it is something.”

SHS students have worked hard to graduate and earn their diplomas, and the addition of more senior privileges would not only help celebrate their accomplishments, but would also help make their last year at SHS a truly memorable one.
