After Prom 2015

Race car simulators, virtual sports, $300 worth of gift cards? Are you ready for a FREE night of food, fun, laughter, and excitement? After prom is the party after the party. It is held at Sandwich High School throughout the entire building right after prom ends. The After prom is completely different experience than that of prom. Prom is held in a ball room, with elegant dresses and tuxedos, filled with a night of dancing. After prom is where the activities come in. From dusk to dawn you get to spend fun quality time with your friends and fellow upperclassmen experiencing a bond you have never experienced before.

After Prom takes place from 11:30 p.m on Saturday the 23rd to 5 a.m. Sunday the 24th. You do not have to be present at the prom itself to be able to go to this exciting event, ALL juniors and seniors are welcomed. Students who are attending, need to be at the doors by 12:30 p.m at the latest.

Carolyn Polidor, a member of Sandwich High School’s after prom committee, is helping out with the after prom excitement and estimates that there will be about approximately 300 students attending the after prom. Students show up at prom in ball gowns and tuxedos, while after prom is much more laid back. Polidor, states that “We understand most students want to go home after the prom and change into their comfortable clothes for the night! So as far as dress code goes...keeping in mind the student dress code of course, PJ's and/or sweats are welcome.”

After prom is filled with many exciting events, as there have been in years past, but many of the events that will take place throughout the night are kept a secret, the biggest secret being the theme of the party. Polidor says that the after prom committee is renting their events from a different company this year, meaning students can look forward to some new and fresh activities. Things will be changed up a bit this year. The Committee has heard from some students that the events seem similar year after year, so those who are attending for a second or third time get to experience an exciting new night.

Nancy Horwood, another member of the after prom committee, talking about the events taking place throughout the night, says that “We have added more high-tech entertainment. There will be race car simulators, virtual sports, a digital graffiti wall and a few other surprises. We also have two sporting tournaments that will be taking place in the gym: Human Hungry Hungry Hippo (played with teams of 2 on scooters) and Bubble Soccer. There will be cash prizes for the winners of these events! Students should start thinking about who they want their partner to be!”.

There are going to be team activities held in the gym, meaning you need to get your two-person teams ready to go head to head with friends.

The most famous happening that many juniors anticipate is the mechanical bull. Polidor, talking about the bull says, “Most Juniors look forward to the mechanical bull, since they always hear about it from year to year. We didn't want to disappoint...however, this year's may have a twist...you'll have to come and see for yourself!”

One factor that many people look forward to at any party is of course food! Horwood says that, “there will be PLENTY of food and drinks (including a coffee bar).” Many local businesses have been extremely generous to our after prom committee, meaning no one will go hungry. “We'll have pizza, sandwiches, wings, snacks, a candy bar, coffee bar, and HS parents are donating lots of desserts!” Polidor claims. How could you go wrong?

Throughout the night there are many raffles and cash prizes being given away for any student who attends the after prom to win. Kathryn Siranosian, prom committee member, talks about the biggest raffle of the night, “The Knight Out Raffle, which has a value of over $1400 now!.” Siranosian said that the the “Knight out” raffle includes airfare for two on Cape Air to Nantucket Inn, which includes breakfast, and over 400$ in gift certificates to local restaurants. Flynn’s Irish Pub, Bobby Byrne’s, the Belfry Inn & Bistro, Bleu, Aroma Tavern and Grill, are all some of the restaurants you could win gift certificates to if you are the winner for this amazing raffle. Only 250 tickets will be sold, and the winner will be pulled on Mother’s Day, May 10th. The tickets will be available from Sandwich High School PTSA members, and at Momo’s Food Emporium, 598 Route 6A, East Sandwich.

“The After Prom is truly a reflection of how much our community cares for its young people. The After Prom Committee is part of the SHS PTSA, and we've been working for months to raise the funds for this event. (All told, it costs nearly $20,000!) We estimate about 250 potential donors will be solicited for contributions, and we are recognizing the businesses that donated in ‘Thank You Thursday’ posts on Facebook.” According to Siranosian.

Scores of volunteers are needed for the After Prom decorating, chaperoning, and clean-up. “Volunteering for such a big event can be a huge undertaking”, Siranosian claims, “but it is worth every minute because we know it helps keep kids safe”. The after prom takes months to plan, and uses many many hands to help with the fundraising so enough money can be raised to put on a very fun night.

“We're very fortunate to have an amazing group of parents joining forces to run the after prom this year. We've had many successful fundraisers (Knight of Comedy & Magic, Roche Brothers, 99 Restaurant to name a few)” Polidor states, “We are especially grateful to all of the amazing local businesses and parents who've contributed to the cause. It's such an important night to keep kids safe...and the PTSA and after prom group has been doing an outstanding job at it for years!”
