SHSMUN or Sandwich High School Model United Nations is one way to get involved with the school. SHSMUN is a conference where 11 schools nominate students to debate on national topics, with each student representing a nation.

Depending on grade the students were separated into classrooms. Each classroom had a topic of discussion such as HeforShe, Citizenship, and US and Russia talk. SHSMUN took almost the whole day, starting at 8am to ending at 4pm.

HeforShe a campaign for women’s rights, but in the male’s perspective, rather than females.

SHSMUN met Saturday May 2nd, at Sandwich High School. The director of this year’s meet was Mr. Franke, a History teacher at SHS.

Trevor Wack, a former Sandwich High School student said, “Mr. Franke is a highly qualified teacher at SHS. He is a ‘man with a plan’ and keeps the program going every year.”

The conferences started up in 2007. Now, there are 26 students who participated in this year’s conference.

SHSMUN member Kelley Fitzgerald says, “ I think it increases international awareness.”

Kelley was a moderator for the HeforShe topic. “Everyone worked hard to come up with solutions but certain cultures got in the way”.

Sandwich High School United Nations is something not only involved in the high school, however.

Sophomore Katrina Garbacik who had attended this club at Oak Ridge explains, “ I joined International Studies because I did it in 7th and 8th grade, and it was really fun.”

Mr. Franke and his students think SHSMUN went well this year. This was the ninth model UN at Sandwich High School. Both students and faculty from other schools were very complementary of our students and the model UN itself.
